Even when things go badly, we are able to be happy if our experiences include some degree of significance.
  • 119. “All great achievement requires persistence.” If we set aside all the obstacles that come up along the way, we can easily get discouraged — especially if we fail repeatedly. However, if we persevere despite our initial failures, we can ultimately reap the rewards of our efforts. Through perseverance, we gain experience and develop new skills, which helps us build confidence and improve our chances of succeeding later on.
  • 120. “You can always find your own path towards success.” No one else can tell us exactly how we should direct our energy and talents. If we try relying solely on the advice of experts, we can forget that each person has his or her own unique characteristics. What works for someone else may not work for us. Moreover, even when someone tries to guide us toward achieving goals, we often resist any type of direction because we fear failure. Yet, we may have difficulty finding our own course of action without some outside help. As a result, we might feel frustrated by this lack of control over our lives.
  • 121. “I am my own best friend.” We cannot entirely rely on anyone else’s opinion and guidance. Sometimes we need to take matters into our own hands and make critical decisions on our own. This allows us to have full ownership over our lives. By taking charge, we can also enjoy greater self-responsibility and increased sense of agency. Of course, this approach comes at a price, which is that we will eventually face the consequences of our actions. But, since we do not blame others for our mistakes, we can remain optimistic enough to try again next time.
  • 122. “Some people live their entire lives with the knowledge that someday they will die.” Death is unavoidable. Every human being on earth will one day cease to exist. But, many people spend so much of their time focused on getting through today that they neglect the fact that there is no tomorrow. Instead, we spend too much time procrastinating rather than living life fully while we still have an opportunity to do so. Because we may never know if our time here on Earth is limited, it makes sense to seize the moment and enjoy life to its fullest. Otherwise, we may regret the choices we made during our lifetime.
  • 123. “The world is filled with individuals who are less fortunate than me. I must therefore support them.” During tough times, we sometimes become overwhelmed by the number of problems facing the world. In response, we can choose to ignore such challenges. Or, we can use our resources to help those around us. When we give back to others, we realize just how much we have been given. Doing so serves as a reminder of the fundamental value of giving and receiving. It gives us the motivation to continue helping others because we now see the value in doing so.
  • 124. Each person’s job is different from everyone else’s.” Although we often hear stories of great leaders or role models who inspired others to follow in their footsteps, this is simply fiction. Everyone’s destiny is unique; there is no single master plan for everyone’s life. The best approach is to start working hard on what we want to achieve, regardless of whether we think we are capable of performing well in the same situation as other people. With practice and perseverance, we may be able to reach new heights once we overcome our fears and doubts.
  • 125. “There is nothing more difficult than striving for excellence.” To succeed in all aspects of life — including business, sports, academics, relationships and personal development — requires continuous effort. People who are successful tend to put forth effort every day, yet this does not mean that they are complacent. Instead, they strive to grow and improve themselves. They understand that making progress is incremental, thereby allowing them to keep moving forward even when faced with obstacles. Even when they encounter setbacks, they recognize these events as learning opportunities rather than reasons to quit.
  • 126. “Success is achieved step by step, one small action at a time.” Success takes work. There is no quick fix for achieving success. If you expect that everything will happen overnight, then you’re probably going about things wrong. So, if you don’t make any progress, then you won’t get anywhere. You should focus on growing one specific skill or area of weakness at a time. Once you develop mastery in that particular field, you’ll find yourself making steady improvements. Your efforts will pay off over time.
  • 127. “If I am not willing to risk the possibility of failure, how can I possibly hope to succeed?” To succeed completely, you need to accept the likelihood that some aspect of your plans could go awry. Many successful people were first failures. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they had bad ideas or failed because they lacked creativity. Instead, they realized, “I’m not good enough yet, so I need to practice before I make my next move.” No matter what field you’re in, if you want to achieve excellence, you must be willing to take risks.
